On September 7th, 2016, Canadian Students for Sensible Drug Policy will be hosting its first youth round table on the legalization of cannabis, titled “Youth Speak: Cannabis Legalization in the 21st Century”. Early in the year, we spoke about why it’s important to actually listen to youth voices in this larger debate, particularly when so much of the proposed regulations foster the end goal of “protecting young people”.
At this event, CSSDP will take feedback produced through the one day workshop and create an outcome document that will prioritize four key areas:
- Age Restrictions
- The Criminalization of Youth
- Prevention and Education
- Production, Distribution and Access Restrictions
The workshop will be hosted by youth, for youth, and includes a diverse set of young voices from a variety of experiences. We are making every effort to ensure a Task Force member is present for at least part of the day, as well as local MPs in the city, such as the Honourable MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. Although it is one small event in the broader legalization landscape, it is promising that the Legalization Secretariat has been supportive throughout this process of carving out some space for young people to have their voices heard.
We are thankful to Lift Cannabis for supporting this event, and for helping us to push youth initiatives in cannabis policy forward.
