December was a big month for cannabis jobs in Canada. Although the first month to see a decrease in the volume of new listings per week since Labour Day, the festive season also saw the first major wave of cannabis job listings for provincial institutions such as Ontario’s LCBO and the BC Liquor Distribution Branch.
This month saw 245 new listings for cannabis jobs posted to nationwide job boards. That’s an average of 55 new listings per week throughout December, down 5 percent from the average 58 listings per week in November.
Here are some of the new postings since our previous round-up.
Farming and production
Entry-level production positions this month were mainly concentrated in Ontario, with the majority listed by Canopy Growth Corp.
Positions for a production assistant and for a plant maintenance technician are available at Canopy’s production facility in Smiths Falls, while their Niagara-on-the-Lake facility is seeking another production assistant and a trimmer.
Growers with experience are needed for senior roles across the country.
Tantalus Labs is hiring a cultivation associate in Maple Ridge, BC. Two companies have listings seeking master growers in Calgary—one at Northland Subway, one at Boaz Pharmaceuticals—while industry heavyweight Aurora seeks a tissue culture technician in Cremona, AB.
In Ontario, seasoned growers are needed for Muskoka Grown Inc’s Bracebridge facility, for Canopy Growth Corp in Niagara-on-the-Lake, and for Starseed Medicinal in Bowmanville. A master grower is being sought in Montréal, and a lead cultivator is needed for Aurora’s facility in Pointe-Claire.
Working at a cannabis farm doesn’t always mean being a farmer—production facilities of all shapes and sizes require supporting staff to keep them running smoothly. Entry-level jobs like pest management technician and sanitation technician can get your foot in the door, while positions like senior maintenance technician are open to skilled tradesfolk.
Sales and distribution
Although storefront dispensaries still fall within the grey-market classification while cannabis remains illegal at the federal level, entry-level retail customer service staff are always in high demand. Retail team members are needed in Calgary, Edmonton, and Winnipeg, while budtenders are needed in Vancouver at Cannabis Culture and Weeds, and in Victoria, BC, at Farmacy Victoria.
Corporate and office roles
Listings for entry-level corporate roles remain in good supply. Positions are available for executive assistants at Cronos Group Inc in Toronto, ON, and at NCC in Victoria, BC. Broken Coast Cannabis is hiring a shipper/receiver in Duncan, BC, and a customer care specialist is being sought by Canopy Growth Corp for their location in Smiths Falls, ON.
For senior and executive roles, AgMedica Bioscience is seeking a director of finance in Chatham-Kent, ON, and Canopy is still accepting applications for director of government and stakeholder relations in Vancouver, BC.
The new provincial agency tasked with bringing cannabis to LCBO outlets, the Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation (OCRC), is hiring store managers for their locations in Ajax, Brampton, Hamilton, Niagara Falls, Oakville, St. Catherines, and Vaughan.
The LCBO itself is hiring a communications specialist at their office in Toronto. Adecco is partnering with Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation (OCRC) to recruit for permanent, full time Store Managers in Oshawa, Whitby, Kingston, Lindsay (Kawartha Lakes), Peterborough, Toronto, and Ottawa.
Canadians can expect subsequent waves of public-sector hirings in BC and Ontario, and in other provinces where Crown corporations are set to provide some or all of the retail sales in their respective jurisdictions.
As always, for the most up-to-date listings check your local classified resources, and national job boards like Cannabis At Work, SimplyHired, Indeed, and the Government of Canada’s online job bank. And of course, visit jobs.lift.co for opportunities, as well. Past job reports from Lift News here.
