Cannabis jobs in Canada: who’s hiring (April 2018 edition)

Dreaming of a cannabis job? Here are the highlights from this month's openings

It’s been another whirlwind month for the Canadian cannabis industry: Saskatchewan revealed its plans for privately owned cannabis retail, PEI announced it will allow outdoor weed cultivation and Bill C-45, the Cannabis Act, made it through its second reading in the Senate.

March saw a slight decrease in the rate of new cannabis job listings, with an average of just 73 new listings per week throughout the month — down 13 per cent from February’s average of 84 listings per week.

Farming and production

A tidal wave of entry-level cannabis production jobs washed over the boards this month.

Duncan, B.C.'s Broken Coast and Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont.'s Adecco and Canopy Growth Corp. need cultivation assistants.

Canopy is also hiring a processing assistant for their facility in Smiths Falls, Ont. Another processing assistant is needed at Emblem’s facility in Paris, Ont. Meanwhile in Edmonton, Alta., Aurora Cannabis is looking to hire a harvest team member.

Canopy is also hiring an assistant irrigation specialist in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., while Eteros Technologies is seeking a production technician in Surrey, B.C., to help with industrial cannabis equipment.

Opportunities for non-entry level roles are mainly concentrated in Ontario this month. Assistant growers with degrees and experience in horticulture are being needed in Petrolia at Tilray, and in Bradford at both MedReleaf and Up Cannabis. In Chatham-Kent, AgMedica Bioscience is seeking a cultivation technician, while a quality assurance specialist is needed at Simcoe Growers in Toronto.

Outside of Ontario, Tweed is hiring a labour supervisor and a general manager of operations for their facility in Delta, B.C.

Sales and distribution

Note: recreational cannabis is still illegal across Canada, and even medical-only storefront retailers distributing cannabis operate illegally. As a result, dispensary employees may be exposed to legal risks.

Front-line sales staff continue to be in high-demand, with new listings mainly concentrated in British Columbia. Budtenders are needed at FARM (formerly Farmacy) in Victoria, at 642 Cannabis in Sooke, and at the Nelson Potorium in Nelson.

In VancouverSWED Society, Green Panda, Leaves of Zazie, Eggs Canna and Weeds are all looking for budtenders. Vancouver's Weeds also needs a call-centre agent fluent in French and English.

East of the Rockies, dispensary sales roles are open in Barrie, Ont., and in Toronto at both MB Meds and Toronto Canna.

Openings are also available at fully legal Health Canada-licensed producers, and other legal cannabis-related businesses. TVape is seeking a sales rep in Toronto for their vaporizer equipment outlet. Meanwhile customer service reps are needed at Broken Coast Cannabis in Duncan, B.C.; in Ontario at CannMart in Etobicoke; at CannTrust in Vaughan and at the provincial government’s Ontario Cannabis Retail Corporation in cities throughout the province.

Corporate and tech roles

Few entry-level corporate positions were listed this month, dwarfed by a plethora of openings for skilled and managerial corporate roles.

In Vaughan, Ont., an HR assistant is needed at CannTrust, while an office & admin assistant is needed at Arev in Vancouver, B.C.

Experienced executive assistants are in-demand, with openings at The Green Organic Dutchman in Mississauga, Ont., at Lunaverse in Calgary, Alta., at Croft Consulting in Vancouver and at Shelter in Victoria, B.C.

Aura Cannabis is hiring a project coordinator in Vancouver, a legal clerk is needed at MedReleaf in Markham, Ont. and Aurora is hiring a translator for their offices in Montréal, Que.

In Toronto, Aphria is looking for a graphic designer. TVape is hiring a communications associate and a video content creator.

Canopy Growth is seeking an IT systems administrator in Delta, B.C., and an assistant general manager in Smiths Falls, Ont., while their Toronto offices are seeking an associate brand manager and a manager of national revenue.

A financial controller is needed at Quadron Cannatech in Langley, B.C, and a purchasing manager is needed in Beamsville, Ont., at Up Cannabis.

Aurora is hiring a manager of corporate planning in B.C., and their Alberta operations require a manager of equipment purchases in Nisku and an assistant manufacturing controller in Edmonton.

Regional managers are being hired at NewLeaf Cannabis in cities throughout Alberta, including Calgary, Edmonton, Red Deer, and Lethbridge.

Research & clinical services

A medical office assistant is needed for Canadian Cannabis Clinics in Medicine Hat, AB, while TerrAscend is seeking a part-time patient educator in Toronto.

Canopy Growth has openings at their Smiths Falls facility for a laboratory assistant and a research assistant with a focus on plant genomics.

Meanwhile, Aurora is seeking a project manager for research and development at their facility in Nisku, Alta., and Ascent Industries has yet to fill the position of vice president of science, research, and product development at their facilities in Maple Ridge, B.C.
