Cannabis jobs in Canada: who's hiring (February 2018 edition)

After a December lull, Canadian weed job listings are back on the rise in the new year

Another landmark month for the cannabis industry means an influx of new cannabis jobs for Canadians. January saw a number of regulatory developments, consistent industry growth, and some of the most ambitious corporate cannabis ventures to date, including Canadian licensed producer Aurora's dramatic $1.1 billion acquisition of CanniMed.

In the past month, 268 new listings for cannabis jobs have been posted to national job boards — an average of 67 new listings per week, up by roughly 20 per cent from December’s 55-per-week average. [And today, we added a long list of opportunities at Lift!]

Here are some of the new listings available since our previous round-up.

Remote/telecommuting

Only two current listings offer the ability to work from home.

Web-based cannabis information hub Weedmaps is seeking a field sales rep, and retail technology company GetGreenline is seeking a software engineer for their Vancouver, B.C. office, with an option to work from home except for weekly team meetings.

Farming and production

Entry-level labourers are always needed at various stages of production.

In Ontario, Canopy Growth Corp is hiring a processing assistant at their facility in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ont., while Peace Naturals has openings at their Stayner, Ont. facility for a plant-care labourer, a harvest labourer, and a junior extraction technician.

Mid-level labour positions have become available across the country.

Tweed Inc is seeking a grower technician with horticultural education or experience for their facility in Langley, B.C., as well as a labour supervisor at the same location. A propagation team member is needed for the Aurora Sky facility in Nisku, Alta., and an irrigation coordinator is needed at MedReleaf in Markham, Ont.

Skilled growers continue to be in demand.

An experienced grower with a focus on propagation is being sought for Tweed’s Langley, B.C. facility, and on Salt Spring Island, B.C., a master grower is needed at the Good Buds Company. Meanwhile, the previous month’s listings for master growers in Bracebridge, Ont., and in Montréal, Que., remain open to applicants.

Note that nationwide, storefront retailers distributing cannabis are operating illegally and employees may be exposed to legal risks.

Canopy Growth Corp is amidst a major hiring initiative, seeking an intermediate-level customer care representative in Hamilton, Ont., provincial sales managers in Alberta, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, and a director of sales for western Canada based out of Edmonton, Alta.

Industry-adjacent sales positions are also available. Corporate and office roles

While January saw almost no new entry-level postings in office roles, an  intermediate and senior roles have exploded on the job boards.

One junior position was listed — an administrative coordinator is needed at the recently licensed Aurora Sky facility in Nisku, Alta.

Meanwhile, a project manager is also needed at Aurora’s facility in Nisku, and experienced executive assistants are needed at Aura Cannabis in Vancouver and at Tweed in Delta, B.C.
